Rose Molokoane is the winner of last year’s Habitat Scroll of Honour. This South African veteran of the anti-apartheid struggle is a grassroots activist working to bring land and homes to the poor. Her work through the South African Homeless People’s Federation has helped more than 150,000 squatters, mostly women, build over 15,000 new homes. She will be talking about inclusive processes as part of the Dialogue on Achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs): Slum Upgrading and Affordable Housing. David Satterthwaite is a pioneer in the field of urbanization. For the past 25 years, he has advanced our understanding of water, health, poverty and how to make cities more sustainable. In 2004, he was one of the recipients of the Volvo Environment Prize. Dr. Satterthwaite will be talking about Financing Slum Upgrading and Affordable Housing as part of the Dialogue on Achieving the MDGs. More on the Dialogues... EARTH: The World Urban Festival celebrates arts and culture While at WUF3 take part in EARTH: The World Urban Festival where themes of environmental protection, human rights and social justice will find expression at this arts and culture festival. Artists and performers from 24 countries will transform an industrial site in central Vancouver into a vibrant community with a dynamic mix of performances, visual arts, arts-based workshops, seminars, late night events and food. Professor John Friedmann, winner of UN-HABITAT Lecture Award Professor John Friedmann, the first ever recipient of the United Nations Human Settlements Lecture Award, will deliver a lecture at WUF3. Friedmann is an Honorary Professor at the School of Community and Regional Planning, University of British Columbia. For more than 30 years this urban planner has influenced generations of planning students and practitioners from around the world with his progressive ideas about regional development, world cities and the importance of civil society in planning and governance. The photographer whose image gets the most votes will receive a People’s Choice Award, a cash prize worth $1,000 CAD. Le photographe qui obtiendra le plus grand nombre de votes recevra le Prix du public, un prix en argent d'une valeur de 1 000 $ CA.
